The "JAKE"
"It is a symbol that will always stand in history of Navy diving, that Mark V hat, that Mark V helmet. Whether you see it with the zinc on, or the tin on, or if you see it in the polished version, it will always be the symbol of divers.'
The "crossed swords" represent the military's strength with regards to Physical Security. Both swords point upwards symbolizing the importance of always being on guard, as they are always situated ready for battle.
A "skull and crossbones" is a symbol consisting of a human skull and two long bones crossed together under or behind the skull. The design originated in the Late Middle Ages as a symbol of death and especially as a memento mori on tombstones.
"By the mark twain!" at two fathoms; "By the deep six!" at six fathoms. Perhaps due to an association with "six feet under" (dead and buried), to give something the deep six (or to deep-six it) was to throw it overboard, or, by extension, to discard it.
The penname Mark Twain came from a term used in navigation. A "mark" was an impression on a line which was used to measure the depth of the river. "Twain" denoted a number: 2 fathoms, or 12 feet. "Mark twain" referred to the depth at which it was safe for steamboats to travel on the river.
deep-six
To dispose of, discard, or get rid of: "The board of directors deep-sixed the proposal without even reading it." This phrase is derived from the noun "deep six," meaning burial at sea and referring to the depth water necessary for such a burial. The term was later used as slang for a grave (customarily six feet underground) and, by extension, as a verb meaning "to kill."
